Dental hygiene is not a cosmetic extra — it is the foundation of long-term health for your teeth and gums. A regular professional clean removes tartar and plaque from the places an ordinary brush cannot reach, and heads off gum disease, decay and early tooth loss.
At Viva Dental hygiene is a full appointment, not a quick polish. Our hygienist cleans with ultrasound and Airflow, treats sensitive necks of teeth, checks the state of your gums and shows you how to look after your teeth at home. The result: cleaner teeth, healthier gums and a visibly brighter smile, straight after the visit.
We recommend seeing the hygienist at least once a year, ideally twice. Every six months for patients with sensitive gums or a tendency to build up tartar.
Does a hygiene appointment hurt?
Most patients report no pain at all. With sensitive gums or heavier tartar it can be mildly uncomfortable, and the hygienist always works to what you can tolerate. If you are very sensitive, local anaesthesia is an option.
How long does it take?
A full hygiene appointment with us is 60 minutes. That covers a thorough clean, Airflow, home-care instruction and a check of your gums.
Can I come for hygiene if my dentist is elsewhere?
Yes. You do not have to be registered with us for a hygiene appointment — book whenever it suits you.
Is it suitable for children?
Yes — we see children from an early age. Looking after milk teeth is what healthy adult teeth are built on.
How often should I come for hygiene?
Once a year is enough for most patients, twice is ideal. We will suggest the right interval based on your gums and how quickly you build up tartar.
A filling is one of the most common treatments there is. At Viva Dental we use white composite fillings only, matched to the natural colour of the tooth — no black amalgam and nothing anyone can see.
It is quick and painless: under local anaesthesia the dentist removes the damaged tissue and replaces it with a high-quality composite cured with light. The result is immediate — the tooth looks natural and works as it did before.
The sooner decay is treated, the simpler and cheaper the fix. Left alone it goes deeper, reaches the pulp and ends up needing root canal treatment or an extraction.
Does having a filling hurt?
No. It is done under local anaesthesia, so you will not feel pain during the treatment itself. Once the anaesthetic wears off the tooth may be slightly sensitive to cold or pressure — that is normal and settles within a few days.
How long does a filling last?
With good home care and regular check-ups, composite fillings last seven to ten years, sometimes longer.
Can I eat straight afterwards?
We suggest waiting at least two hours, until the anaesthetic has fully worn off, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue.
What if I am afraid of the dentist?
Dental anxiety is common. We work gently and without rushing, and for stronger anxiety treatment can be done with sedation — just ask when you book.
What if an old filling falls out?
Call us as soon as you can — an exposed tooth is more sensitive and decays faster. For urgent cases we try to find a slot the same day.
Professional whitening is one of the quickest and most affordable ways to change how your smile looks. Unlike over-the-counter kits, we use proven products at the right concentrations, supervised by a dentist — safely, and with a visible result.
In-practice whitening with the BEYOND system happens in a single visit: the dentist applies the gel and activates it with light, and the result is immediate. Complete whitening adds home care in custom-made trays to that appointment — a stronger result that lasts longer. Home whitening is also available on its own.
We recommend pairing whitening with a hygiene appointment: clean teeth whiten more evenly and the result holds longer.
Is professional whitening safe for enamel?
Yes, done properly and at the recommended intervals. We do not recommend it with very sensitive teeth or active decay — those need treating first.
How many shades lighter will they go?
Most patients gain four to eight shades. Staining from tobacco or coffee responds well; grey discolouration from antibiotics responds poorly, and a veneer is the better answer there.
How long does the result last?
Six to twelve months for in-practice whitening, longer with the complete course. It depends on habits — coffee, tea, wine and smoking bring the staining back faster.
Can teeth with crowns or veneers be whitened?
Whitening does not work on artificial materials — crowns, veneers or fillings. If you have visible restorations, talk to us before whitening.
How do I keep the result as long as possible?
Skip coffee, tea, red wine and smoking for the first two days — enamel takes up stains most easily then. After that, normal care and regular hygiene are enough.
Root canal treatment saves a tooth that would otherwise have to come out. It is needed when inflammation or infection reaches the pulp — usually because of deep decay, a cracked tooth or repeated treatment of the same tooth.
The aim is to remove the infected tissue, disinfect thoroughly and seal the canals so the tooth can carry on working. It is done under local anaesthesia, and most patients describe it as easier than they expected.
We use the modern ENDO3 technique, which cleans even awkwardly shaped canals more thoroughly. Once the treatment is finished we recommend covering the tooth with a crown.
Does root canal treatment hurt?
It is done under local anaesthesia and most patients find it no worse than having a filling. The pain beforehand — from the infection — is usually far worse than the treatment itself.
How many appointments does it take?
One or two in most cases. A more stubborn infection or several canals can need a third.
Why do you recommend a crown afterwards?
A treated tooth is weaker inside and more likely to crack. A zirconia crown covers and protects it, and matches it back to the teeth around it.
How do I know I need it?
The usual signs: lasting toothache (especially with hot or cold), a swollen gum, a tooth going darker, or pain when biting.
Can a treated tooth become infected again?
Rarely, but yes — usually when the seal on the tooth stops being tight. That is why we recommend a crown after root canal treatment and a check at your next visit.
Taking a tooth out is the last resort — we always try to save it first. Sometimes there is no way around it: a badly damaged tooth, a wisdom tooth causing trouble, or preparation for an implant or orthodontic treatment.
We treat every extraction on its own terms. A straightforward one takes a few minutes under local anaesthesia. For impacted wisdom teeth or more demanding cases we use a surgical approach — as precise as possible, with as little trauma to the tissue as possible.
You will get clear aftercare instructions. Healing is usually uneventful and most patients are back to normal the next day.

What is a surgical extraction, and when is it needed?
For teeth that have not fully come through (impacted wisdom teeth, for instance), that are broken below the gum line, or that have curved roots.
What should I do afterwards?
For the first 24 hours: no hot drinks, no smoking, no vigorous rinsing and no strenuous exercise. If bleeding carries on for more than two hours, contact us.
Do I have to do something about the gap?
With an adult tooth, yes, and the sooner the better. A dental implant is the best answer.
Can I drive or go to work after an extraction?
After a routine extraction under local anaesthetic, yes. After a surgical one, keep the rest of the day free and avoid physical exertion.
Oral surgery covers procedures in the mouth, jaws and soft tissue that go beyond ordinary dental treatment. We carry them out in a fully equipped surgery, with the emphasis on patient safety and as little strain as possible.
The most common are bone grafting, a sinus lift in the upper jaw, root-end resection where root canal treatment is not enough, and removal of cysts in the jaw.
Everything is done under local anaesthesia, with sedation if needed. The surgical consultation is free.
Does bone grafting hurt?
It is done under local anaesthesia. Afterwards the area can be swollen and tender for three to five days — that is the normal healing response.
Why do I need a sinus lift before an implant?
In the upper jaw the bone beneath the sinus is often too thin to hold an implant safely. A sinus lift builds it up.
How long is the recovery?
Five to ten days after a straightforward extraction or a minor procedure. Longer after a bone graft or sinus lift — full integration of the bone takes several months.
Is oral surgery suitable for older patients?
Yes — age on its own is not a contraindication. Where there are general health conditions we consult your doctor first. The surgical consultation is free.
What should I bring to a surgical appointment?
A list of the medication you take and any allergies. If you are on blood thinners, tell us in advance — we adjust the procedure accordingly.
Orthodontics is not only about looks — straight teeth are easier to clean, wear down less and spare the jaw joint. We treat both children and adults, with a choice between fixed braces and clear aligners.
Fixed braces come in metal, ceramic and sapphire. Ceramic and sapphire are far less noticeable, which is why adults tend to choose them. Treatment usually runs 12 to 24 months depending on the case.
Clear aligners (Invisalign) are transparent removable trays that move the teeth into position step by step — nearly invisible, and they do not change how you eat.
How young can a child start?
We recommend a first orthodontic check at around seven. Fixed braces usually go on between 11 and 13.
Invisalign or fixed braces?
Fixed braces are more precise in complex cases. Invisalign is removable and discreet, but it only works if you wear it at least 22 hours a day.
Do I have to wear a retainer afterwards?
Yes — a retainer is essential after any orthodontic treatment, otherwise the teeth drift back over time.
Do insurers cover orthodontics?
In Slovakia insurers cover part of orthodontic treatment at contracted providers. Treatment here is paid for by the patient — at the consultation we will tell you the exact price and the whole plan.
How often are check-ups during treatment?
Every four to eight weeks with fixed braces, less often with clear aligners. The orthodontist sets the interval based on how the teeth are moving.
